Klawans pursued a dual career as a graphic designer and printmaker. He was an art director with SmithKline & French Laboratories and became Director of Design, SmithKline Beckman Corporation. (Glaxosmithkline). He was also a member of the Ars Media Print Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.. 

His prints have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Print Center of Philadelphia where he won the Philadelphia Museum of Art Print Prize and the Lessing Rosenwald Print Prize. A recent digital print, Big Red , has been acquired by the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia for their permanent collection. His pharmaceutical design work is in the collection of the Science History Museum, Philadelphia. 

He was a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York, the Society Of Illustrators, New York, The Philadelphia Art Directors Club, and was president of the Philadelphia Sketch Club. 

He is currently a board member of the Plastic Club, Philadelphia, The American Color Print Society and a member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. He is represented by the Artist's Gallery, Lambertville, New Jersey.
